Carl Smith Collection
This fascinating and invaluable collection is a very useful tool to help researcher identify basic data and sources of information on individuals, organizations, buildings, roads, land matters and important events relating to Hong Kong, Macau and China's coastal cities from the mid 19th century onward.
The Collection comprises 139,922 double-sided data cards. They were painstakingly compiled by Reverend Carl Smith through some 25 years' intensive research into a vast quantity of original records, newspapers and publications held by the Public Records Office (PRO).
In 1995, the Collection was microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah and a copy was donated by the Reverend Smith to the PRO in the same year. To facilitate access and use, we started to digitize and index the entire Collection in 1997. The project was subsequently completed in November 2001.
For the protection of personal data, this site provides only the index to the Carl Smith Collection that includes the names of persons, organizations, places, covering years and card numbers recorded in each data card. The index will help users ascertain if the Collection may contain the information that they need. For the digitized images of the Collection, they are available for viewing at the online catalogues of the Public Records Office of Hong Kong.
To comply with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, those digitized images containing personal data will be released for only research and statistical purposes.
