Education was an important tool for instilling Japanese culture and values into Hong Kong people. From May 1942, schools in Hong Kong were gradually re-opened. The replacement of English by Japanese as the official language was one obvious change that tool place dring the Japanese Occupation. Students were required to learn Japanese. All primary and secondary schools were obliged to conduct Japanese classes at least 4 hours a day.
